Abstract:

Breakup of a water jet by a swirling coaxial annular air jet is studied by phaseDoppler anemometry experimentally. To understand the influence of swirling gas on the liquid jet breakup, mean diameters of atomized particles are measured for different swirl ratios and velocities of gas. The range of critical swirl ratio, above which the liquid jet undergoes an explosive disintegration, is determined by analyses of the obtained Sauter mean diameter.

Key words: swirling coaxial jet; atomization; phaseDoppler anemometry
