Abstract: Applications of wireless sensor network in road traffic monitoring are rapidly expanded. Traditional topology places network nodes randomly, leading to waste of energy and decreased network throughput. We propose a new way to form the network topology for road traffic. This is achieved by applying a new data frame and a linear placement strategy to reduce both the network load and the redundant information transmission. Simulation results show that the proposed strategy can save node energy, prolong the network life span, and increase network throughput.
