Abstract: This study is to observe the effect of tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBH Q) and 1,1 di(2′,5′ dihydroxy 4′ butyl phenyl)ethane (DTBHQE) in an expe rimental atherosclerosis (AS) model in quails. AS model was produced in quails by admini stration of a high lipid diet, DTBHQE, TBHQ and Fenofibrate were fed for 8 and 1 4 weeks respectively. The total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high densit y lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL C) a nd total anti oxidative capacity (T AOC) in serum, and malondialdehyde (MDA) c on tent in liver were measured. Histopathological examinations of aorta and liver w ere observed under the light and electric microscope. The results show that, com pared with AS model quails, the AS plaque of aortic and coronary arterial endoth elium in quails fed with TBHQ and DTBHQE for 8 or 14 weeks were significantly de creased. The serum TG, TC, HDL C, T AOC and the liver MDA of TBHQ group were o bv iously lower than AS model group. Serum TG, TC, HDL C, LDL C T AOC and the li ver MDA content of DTBHQE groups were obviously lower than AS model group. All the above indicates that TBHQ and DTBHQE have effective action of anti AS.
