Abstract:

High frequency nondestructive ultrasound test using a direct contact pulse-echo method is used to test samples of SUS306 stainless steel that were processed by high temperature heat treatment. Reflected ultrasonic signals were analyzed. Characteristics such as attenuation coefficient, velocity, fundamental frequencies of bottom echoes, and intensity of backscattering waves are studied. Relationship between ultrasonic properties and the average grain diameter of the tested material is obtained. These results are useful in nondestructive detection and in the assessment of the degree of material’s thermal fatigue.
