Abstract

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a widely used antibacterial drug. It is hard to degrade effectively in aqueous solutions in a traditional wastewater treatment process. This study focuses on SMX degradation using an advanced oxidation technique, electron beam radiation, to investigate effects of different factors on degradation. The results show that the degradation rate of electron beam for SMX is high. SMX is almost completely degraded at 5 kGy. Degradation of SMX obeys a pseudo first-order kinetic equation. Alkaline condition and proper amount of H$_2$O$_2$ are beneficial to the degradation. Hydroxyl radical and electron play an important role in the degradation of electron beam. Intermediates can be detected with ion chromatography (IC) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS). Several degradation pathways are proposed.
