Abstract:

For thousands of years, it was an important custom for Chinese peasants to be attached to their native land and reluctant to leave it. Up to the late Qing Dynasty, the Chinese society began to transform from traditional pattern to modern pattern. Due to the operation of the inherent factors in the Chinese society and the gunship policy of Western powers, a large number of Chinese peasants left their native land, surging into the unknown cities. This essay, taking the floating population of the YangtzeZhejiang rural areas as the study case, probes into the challenge of the above floating to the deeprooted rural custom as well as the significance of this changing.
